How We Deliver Java Application Development

Discover

For a new build this is domain modelling and constraints. For existing software it is archaeology. We read the code, run it, check what the dependencies still support, and find out which parts the business actually depends on. That last question matters most, because in most Java estates a fifth of the code carries nearly all of the value and a different fifth is dead but nobody dares delete it.

Architect

A target design, a migration sequence if something already exists, and technology choices justified against your team rather than our preferences. This is where we argue against microservices for most clients. Splitting a working monolith is expensive and frequently trades a slow deployment for a distributed system nobody on the team has debugged before.

Build

Two-week increments, each ending with something deployable. Tests are written alongside the code rather than promised for later, because in a system with a decade ahead of it the test suite is what makes future change affordable. Code review is mandatory and your developers are welcome in it from the first sprint.

Harden

Load testing shaped like your real traffic, JVM and query profiling, dependency and container scanning, and a penetration test where the application warrants one. Java applications tend to fail under load in ways that only appear under load, so this phase is scheduled work rather than a contingency.

Run

Monitoring, alerting, and a documented upgrade path for the JDK and the dependency tree. We either hand this to your team with training or maintain it on a support tier. What we will not do is leave you on a JDK that stops receiving security updates in eighteen months without telling you about it.

One Technology, Many Uses

Java has been declared obsolete roughly once every three years since 1998 and now runs a larger share of banking, insurance, logistics, and government systems than it ever has. The reason is unglamorous: the JVM is fast, the library ecosystem is deep, the language changes carefully, and you can still hire people who know it. OSDY LLC works in Java because those properties matter more than novelty when software has to last.

Most of what we are asked to do falls into three shapes. Build something new where reliability and integration matter more than speed to market. Extend a system that works but was not designed for what the business now needs. Or rescue an estate where the original team has gone, the dependencies are eight years old, and nobody is certain what would break.

The third is the most common and the most misdiagnosed. It usually arrives described as a rewrite, and a rewrite is usually the wrong answer. Replacing working software means rebuilding a decade of accumulated business rules that exist nowhere except in that code, which is why rewrites overrun so reliably.

A working system contains every edge case the business hit over ten years, most of them undocumented. A rewrite starts from the requirements somebody can remember, which is a fraction of them, and the gap surfaces as production bugs eighteen months in. Upgrading the JDK, replacing dead libraries, and refactoring the worst modules is slower to talk about and much faster to finish.
Splitting a Java monolith is fashionable and frequently a mistake. You trade a slow deployment for network calls, distributed transactions, and debugging across service boundaries, and you need the platform maturity to run it. A well-structured monolith with a decent build pipeline serves most organisations better. We recommend the split when team size or scaling genuinely demands it.
Running an unsupported JDK is the most common serious risk we find, and the least discussed. Java 8 and 11 estates are still everywhere. Moving to a supported long-term release is usually less work than teams fear, and it buys real performance for free along with security updates. We treat it as maintenance rather than as a project needing its own business case.
Teams add servers when the problem is an N+1 query, a badly sized connection pool, or garbage collection pauses from a heap configured by nobody in particular. We profile the JVM and the database before touching architecture. The cheapest performance work is almost always the boring kind, and it frequently removes the need for the expensive kind.
Kotlin is a genuine improvement on the JVM and interoperates cleanly, so mixing it into a Java codebase is low risk. It is also another language for your team to maintain. We use it where it earns its place, particularly on Android, and leave a healthy Java codebase alone rather than converting it for its own sake.
Java is the original Android language and still runs a great deal of production Android code alongside Kotlin. It does not run on iOS. So Java mobile app development in practice means a Java backend serving your mobile clients, with Android built in Java or Kotlin and iOS in Swift against the same API. Any firm promising one Java codebase for both platforms is describing something else.
For a small marketing site, a quick prototype, or a data science workflow, Java is heavier than you need. Node, Python, or PHP will get you there faster. Java earns its place when transactions must not be lost, integrations are numerous, load is real, and the system has years ahead of it.
